Mr. Ime Ekpenyong Ekrikpo is an astute civil servant who has distinguished himself having risen through the ranks to attain his current position as a Director in the Federal Civil Service. He has served in various capacities within the Mining and Metallurgical Sectors making valuable contributions to national development. With his background as a Chemist, Geologist and Public Administrator, he has made remarkable contributions to the Federal Civil Service. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Nigerian Metallurgical Society (NMS), Member of the Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN) and a Certificated International Standardization Organization (ISO) qualified person. He has vast experience of the Minerals and Metallurgical Industry locally and internationally having headed the Steel and Non-Ferrous Metals Department, Metallurgical Inspectorate and Raw Materials Development Department, Investment Promotion and Mineral Trade Department as well as a good taint with the Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining Department. He has wide experiences cutting across various disciplines having undertaken several training programs and attended various International Conferences and Seminars across the world. 

CURRENT PROFESSIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS/ACHIEVEMENTS: 
Mr. Ime Ekpenyong Ekrikpo is currently the Director, Metallurgical Raw Materials Development and Investment Promotion Department of the Ministry of Steel Development. He has made sterling contributions to the formation and establishment of the new paradigms in the Metallurgical Industry and mentoring the young and up-coming Officers on the direction of sustainable development of the industry. He led a team of dedicated officers to develop the Renewed Metals Policy and contribute to the articulation of the Roadmap for the sustainable development of the Nigerian Steel Industry as well as the Nigerian Metallurgical Industry Bill.  He is currently designing the template for the sustainable development of the abundant metallurgical raw materials in Nigeria to ensure it is   effective harnessed and utilized to substitute imports and enhance  competitiveness in the global space.

 

 

 

 

FUNCTIONS OF RAW MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT

FUNCTIONS OF THE METALLURGICAL RAW MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT AND INVESTMENT PROMOTION DEPARTMENT OF THE MINISTERY OF STEEL DEVELOPMENT, ABUJA.

  • Provision and Promotion of Advocacy Initiatives for Institutional Frameworks for the implementation of Sustainable Development in the Metallurgical Raw Materials Sourcing;
  • Removing unjustifiable non-tariff barriers that impede the Metallurgical Industry access to International Market;
  • Initiate and Develop Researches into Metallurgical Raw Materials and establish Data Base of such researches in Nigeria;
  • Conduct Market Research into Metallurgical Raw Materials, Spares and Machineries, Supply and Demand Market Trends with a view to support Import Substitution and conservation of Foreign Exchange;
  • Provide Tracking Platform for Metallurgical Industry Trade Data Base in Nigeria;
  • Development of sustainable Market Potentials and Promotion of Metallurgical Raw Materials available in Nigeria in the International Market;
  • Monitor Price Regimes locally and Internationally in order to advise Government on developing Regional, Continental and Global Trends in the Metallurgical Raw Materials;
  • Collate and Analyse Trade and Statistical Raw Materials Data Base for the Metallurgical Industry in Nigeria;
  • Liaise with relevant MDAs to Articulate, Characterize, Categorize and Develop Country Specifications for Metallurgical Raw Materials;
  • Liaise with the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment on Trade and Investment Matters;
  • Sourcing and Comparison of local and foreign raw materials suitable or incidental to the metallurgical industry in Nigeria;
  • Facilitating and supporting the growth of Trade and Investments in the Metallurgical Industry in Nigeria;
  • Conduct Sensitization and Public Awareness campaigns to promote the Metallurgical Industry in Nigeria 
  • Promotion of the establishment of Industrial Parks, Free Trade Zones and Industrial Clusters for the Metallurgical Industry in Nigeria;
  • Participate in Local and Foreign Mining and Metallurgical Conferences, Symposia, Workshops, Seminars, Study Tours and Promotional Events;
  • Provide Investors with Guidelines and Prospectus for the Metallurgical Industry in Nigeria;
  • Facilitate and promote synergy with Research Institutions and the Academia to achieve translation of successful raw materials research works into performing Metallurgical Business Enterprises;
  • Collaborates with Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) and National to develop Metallurgical Raw Materials Value-Chain in Nigeria;
  • Collaborate with National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) to actualize local value-addition to Metallurgical Raw Materials and Engineering innovation in the Metallurgical Industry in Nigeria; 
  • Facilitate the inculcation of Business Development Enterprise in Metallurgical SMEs to achieve Growth Trajectory through collaboration with local and foreign Institutions;
  • Conduct Oversight function on Metallurgical Raw Materials imported into Nigeria in collaboration with relevant Agencies of Government;
  • Keeping abreast with Global Trends in Metallurgical Industry Technological advancements and innovations and advise Government on options that best suits Nigeria;
  • Advocacy and promotion of Initiatives to ensure the achievement of Local Content in the Nigerian Metallurgical Industry in line with the Presidential Executive Order No. 5. (2018);
  • Promoting Investments in the development of metallurgical raw materials such as Iron Ore, Ferro-Alloys, Flourite, Bauxite, Refractory Clays and Foundry Raw Materials of various definitions;
  • Exercise Supervisory Role over the Raw Materials Exploration, Mining/Beneficiation and Research & Development Agencies of the Ministry of Steel Development existing or established in the future viz:
    1. National Steel Raw Materials Exploration Agency (NSRMEA), Kaduna
    2. National Iron Ore Mining Company (NIOMCO), Itakpe, Kogi State; and
    3. National Metallurgical Development Center (NMDC). Jos. 
  • Prepare and submit Annual Reports of Metallurgical Trade and Investment in Nigeria;
  • Advise Government on Policy Options including Fiscal Measures designed to promote the metallurgical Industry in Nigeria; and
  • Perform such other functions supplementary or incidental to attainment of the objectives of Government as may be assigned by the Minister.
